FAMILIES
GOAL: Increase the capacity for families to provide a safe nurturing environment.

Parenting Education: Create and/or expand parenting education opportunities for mothers, fathers, grandparents, and kinship care providers.

  • ACTION STEP:   Create a system to coordinate parenting education programs and services through a shared website and dissemination of parenting education opportunities, parenting tips and resource information.
  • ACTION STEP:   Support and advocate for increased access to quality child care and pre-school programs in both private and public sector that focus on teaching and modeling non-violent behavior.
  • ACTION STEP:   Increase awareness of and encourage participation in current evidence-based parenting education programs that increase parent bonding, nurturing, and knowledge of appropriate discipline strategies.
  • ACTION STEP:   Provide workshops & information to educate parents and community on the impact of witnessing and/or experiencing violence on children, to recognize violent tendencies in children, and to recognize behaviors that indicate involvement in risk behaviors.
  • ACTION STEP:   Provide workshops and information to educate parents and the community on safety hazards in the home and neighborhood, such as guns, drugs, gangs and the internet.

Neighborhood Watch Organizations, concerned neighbors and friends often help diffuse potentially violent situations. If you know of a crisis that needs immediate intervention, please use an appropriate intervention agency from the list below:

 



Early Identification: Create systems for early identification and referral of high risk families through collaboration of the courts, police, schools, social services, CSB, CSU.

  • ACTION STEP:   Develop a plan to implement Hampton POK model to intervene and treat children exposed to violence in their homes, schools, and communities.
  • ACTION STEP:   Collaborate with faith community to provide support services for parents, such as parenting programs, workshops and support service.
  • ACTION STEP:   Establish a task force to create a system of collaboration with other organizations who may be in the forefront of early identification, such as pastors, teachers, youth leaders.
