Collaboration: Encourage and support collaboration/partnerships among existing and new community groups, such as churches, other faith-based organizations, public housing organizations, community centers, civic clubs, schools, fraternities/ sororities, citizens, youth, businesses, educational institutions and nonprofit organizations.
- ACTION STEP: Encourage neighborhoods to become active in promoting positive children and youth outcomes through initiatives that instill pride, encourage responsibility and strengthen identity.
- ACTION STEP: Expand safe and structured activities and access to leisure and recreational activities in neighborhoods with adult volunteers to build youth skills and competencies and reduce involvement in evidence-based risk behaviors.
- ACTION STEP: Expand and support a network of mentoring initiatives within neighborhoods utilizing neighborhood assets/resources.
- ACTION STEP: Support research-based curriculum/programs based on the principles of Positive Youth Development for implementation in community based organizations to increase Developmental Assets and prevent/reduce participation in risk behaviors.
- ACTION STEP: Initiate “Know Your Neighbor” campaign during a “Neighborhood Action Month or Week.”
Education & Training: Create neighborhood-based educational/training opportunities for all adults to increase knowledge and active participation in improving outcomes for children, youth and families.
- ACTION STEP: Provide education for the early detection, identification and appropriate referral of children and families in need of support and assistance.
- ACTION STEP: Establish neighborhood classes to teach positive family communication.
- ACTION STEP: Establish a Community Leadership Institute for neighborhood leaders.
- ACTION STEP: Provide virtual linkage to information about community services and opportunities.
- ACTION STEP: Support increased quality child care and pre-school programs that focus on teaching and modeling non-violent behavior.
- ACTION STEP: Establish a Neighborhood Resource Coordinator within local government.
- ACTION STEP: Conduct assessments to identify neighborhood strengths, risks, gaps in services, available resources, and target intervention efforts to prevent and reduce participation in risk behaviors.
- ACTION STEP: Provide opportunities for youth to participate in partnership in the development of strategies to create safe and nurturing environments in neighborhoods.
Gang Prevention: Establish a network of programs and services based upon the targeted outreach model for youth identified as at-risk for gang involvement.
- ACTION STEP: Establish Community Gang Prevention Task Force composed of representatives from: NNPS, NNPD, DSS, faith community, OYD, NNRHA, Juvenile Services, CSU, CSB.
- ACTION STEP: Identify staff and create a work plan for DSS to serve as Central Agency to receive referrals and complete preliminary intake process for review by CGPTF.
- ACTION STEP: Identify agencies willing to receive referred youth (Boys & Girls Clubs, Churches Pastoral Counseling Center, “Help Them Now”, YWCA, YMCA, Girls, Inc., NNRDHA, Parks & Recreation, Scott Center, Alternatives, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, OHA).
- ACTION STEP: Creation of monitoring and evaluation plan.
Student Involvement: Increase diverse student involvement in the development and implementation of strategies to reduce violence.
- ACTION STEP: Support the implementation of NNPS Citizenship Education Program K-12.
- ACTION STEP: Create/expand student run committees (peer mediators) to assist in resolving conflict.
- ACTION STEP: Provide opportunities for youth to develop creative media campaigns to promote nonviolence.
- ACTION STEP: Increase leadership skills and expand the leadership roles of youth.
