Keys to a Safer City - for Students Keys to a Safer City - for Neighborhoods

Become involved in positive activities – join a team, club or after school activity
Join a peer mediation group – help others to resolve their differences peacefully
Tutor other youth – share your skills and knowledge and have fun at the same time
Volunteer – help youth your own age or adults of any age – visit a nursing home, help with a project, be active in your neighborhood

Start a parent support group in your neighborhood
Take ownership of your neighborhood youth and encourage positive interactions
Embrace diversity and appreciate our differences
Involve youth in violence prevention
Talk about violence prevention with children and your neighbors

Keys to a Safer City - for Parents

Designate your facility as a “Safe Place” location for all children
Offer your facility as a place to hold parenting classes or violence prevention workshops
Reach out to everyone in your neighborhood regardless of faith
Involve youth in the planning of activities
Support violence prevention month
Encourage members to become involved

 

Join a parent education class.  What you do well, you can do even better.
Monitor your children’s video games and television shows for violent content
Know your child’s friends AND their parents
Be involved with your children in their school – join the PTA, volunteer in the classrooms
Join a parent support group

Recognize your child’s strengths and encourage them
